June has been a busy month with the
Cliff College Mission team with us. Below is a report on what went on,
warts and all! Many
thanks to everyone who provided accommodation and meals for the team
members.
A group of 6 students (Graeme, Mary, James, lnga, Sundar and Jeya)
from Cliff college (A Bible college in the heart of the Peak District) came
to the Nottingham Road Church particularly concentrating on Youth &
Children’s work, but touching many others during the week. The team were
welcomed at a Bar-B-Cue at Dave and Helens house, where those
accommodating team members also met up with them.
Most peoples first
encounter with the team was on Sunday morning when Graeme (The team
leader) led the worship. Sunday was a memorable day with the whole team
involved with everything from Graeme’s theology of the ‘Mr Men’ to
Mary’s leading of the evening congregation in traditional dance!
For the Youth, Sunday Night was the start of what was expected to be
a really great week. A whole feast of activities from Testimony’s,
Music, Games, meditation, drama, sketches, Challenges and of course fun
began. Bringing the God’s word and celebrating
through different means, how much God loves us and what God has planned
for us was the focus of the teams youth work.
Sunday took off with a around 10 members from all groups. There was
a lot of laughs with milk shake making. Then the Team took the lead with a
talk, quiz and testimony.
Youth Sports Outreach
Over 30 kids attended
our Christian in Sports Event on Monday Night. although majority were from
LIGHTHOUSE Youth Club, some brought friends. Organised with a mixture of
sports. It also included a Meet the Team part, which gave the kids a
chance to meet and mingle with the team getting to know them in a more
social and friendly atmosphere. (Graeme shared a very powerful testimony
(See insert later) All experienced a very active and thoughtful night.
Using the Cavendish sports hail.
Upsetting of the applecart!
In the week the club
ran a special youth nights. Tuesday was INTENDED to be a more Chill Out
Night aimed at the older teenagers, including Games, Quiz. sketches, DJ.
Music and a lot more. The night was well attended with over 30 attending.
again a mixture from the Sunday night group, lighthouse Groups and New
friends.
It became very obvious
as the night progressed that our plans for the week were being turned on
their head. The people attending were NOT those we planned for. they were
mainly boys!. They were mostly younger! And were mostly oblivious to
Christianity!
The leaders and team
were battered, bruised and confused by the end of a difficult night!
Not your will but Mine
Despite the outcome
and the way Tuesday night went it seemed to be on the cards that something
was happening and the light was shining bright into the darkness.
Wednesday night took on a major change with around 25 members coming to
experience a more in depth Youth Night. Most of who came the night before
came with a few that caused trouble not turning up. The atmosphere and
attitude was entirely different with the teenagers listening, joining in
and some even taking part in meditation and prayer in a special
‘Experience’ room set up for the Mission week.
Thursday was our night to remember, the night was bigger and more
lights. Music. large screen with video. with a dose of Games, sketches,
prayer and Final words.
Sundar makes a mark
With the help of
Sundar, one of the team who discovered he had a real gift of relating to
the boys, the sight of a circle of boys praying with him was awesome!
Sundar made a choice
to talk with the kids before they came in. mainly to make them more comfy
and understand what was happening, from this time on, something must have
clicked during the night as. the final 5 min many of the boys were
absorbed in prayer with Sundar to chat. prayer. shed a few tears and then
some went into the Mediation ‘Experience’ room afterwards.
From these connections
made we just seek to pray and see what happens now!
Despite the
disappointment of the lack of girls. Also despite a few interruptions from
some attending it was amazing to see them making a step further in their
own journey
The Team ran together with the leaders successful children’s clubs
on Tuesday and Thursday and made well appreciated visits to the Brownies.
Rainbows and Parent and Toddler Groups as well as sharing in the home
group.
Thanks to Paul Parkin
for his help in this report.
Through this experience we learnt that it is vital to listen to God
and take on board His plans, when we did we saw great things happening!
