| Trinity duo chasing semi-final
success TRINITY Boxing Club's newly-crowned Midland
Counties champions are back in action on Saturday in the National Schoolboy championship
semi-finals in Birmingham.
David Wigby (16) and Nathan Hill (13) bid to make the final step to national title
glory at the Hadden Hill Sports complex after impressive performances in their quarter
finals.
David, a national champion in 2000, is in his final year of the schoolboy championships
and forging his way to the finals at class 45 75kg after two impressive stoppage victories
in the previous rounds.
He will face Northern Counties champion Mike Stanton of Kirkby ABC, Liverpool, and will be
on confident mood after his impressive victories leading to the semi's and having already
reached the national boys clubs final earlier in the season. This was a feat which earned
him England recognition. David was called up to the national cadet squad at Crystal
Palace, London, on January. Nathan is in his first year of the national championship and
is in top form, reaching the semi's with two convincing points victories. In Birmingham he
will face Josh Campbell of Blackpool and Fylde ABC hoping to go one step further in
gaining a title the club first won in 1999. The class 1 48kg title was first won by Leon
Dean, giving the club its first ever national schoolboy title. David Wigby followed a year
later at class 1 54kg and in the same year Luke Robinson reached the national final in the
class that David is hoping to win this year. Incidentally, Luke went on to win the Junior
ABA national title last season giving the club three national champions in four years.
Great chance Club coach Scott Rafferty commented: "Both boys have a great chance.
They have both trained hard and prepared well. In the weeks and months before and after
Christmas their preparation had already started, in the gym four times a week, running and
sparring. "They have both given full commitment including following a nutritious diet
that enables them to make their weight comfortably and still be strong and have plenty of
energy in the tank for their training programme. Nathan is revelling in his success and
really up for it. His commitment and enthusiasm deserve the title. David, whilst being
very skilful is also an explosive puncher. His power alone could win the title but, he has
been prepared for the distance and is determined to get his second national title"
