BIG F takes on St Andrews
and Queens in YC 98
After the success of the Youth
Challenge 97 BIG F Leader set out to find more clubs to join in the YC98, 10 Clubs were
interested and after months of waiting small practice matches will be made so everyone can
be prepared. St Andrews and Nuthall were yet again the main clubs, Now
Awsworth,
West Hallam and Queens St Ilkeston and Eastwood join us this year.
Nuthall were out of the tournament due to reasons, Awsworth and Eastwood withdrew
due to lack of team. So it was down to 4, St Andrews couldnot make it on the night so a
one to one challenge was made
Big F 5 v St Andrews 10
In Feb 98 a one to one
challenge was arranged as a start to the climax of YC98. Even though many of the other
teams that followed did not make it. St Andrews did. With a team consisting of Alex
Havill, Alex Towel, Paul Milner, Mark Jefferies (in Goal), Adam Elfleet and Andrew
Wilkinson, It was a tough challenge and we struggled in a desperate bid not to lose again,
but team work and skill was not high as they thrashed us 15-0.
St Andrews were in the line up for the youth challenge on July 18th along
with Awsworth, West Hallam and Queens it looked like a great line up, but the date had to
be change to the 11th, and with most wanting the 25th, it was change again. Awswoth
withdrew due to lack of player and Andrews couldn't make it, so a one to one warm up
challenge was made on the 11th.
St Andrews had 7 on the night and so did we, mostly a good team consisting of
Mark Jefferies, Adam Elfleet, Andrew Wilkinson, Daniel Kirk and Richard Evans, most played
Andrews. This time Ian Kitchen and Jonathan Ford returned to the pitch.
It was a 7-A-Side Match and the first ½ with plenty of skill, stamina and fair play, with
excellent saves from both goal keepers, but mostly from Mark who managed to keep them out,
St Andrews had some good saves and work to do as Big F made a lot of attempts in the first
ten min.. Ian and Jonathan showed a lot of skill and play with plenty of attempts, Daniel,
Richard, Adam showed also showed skill with many attempts. Big F certainly showed strength
in this match and first half and gave Andrews a Hard run.
Though the ball did find the back of the net in the next 5 min, throwing
Andrews into a 2-0 lead, but Ian and Johnathan kept the team together and team work, and
St Andrews plan was shadowed by good play, as they kept Big F's team spirit and hopes high
as he ploughed the first two goals for Big F, brining us level. But ten min from time
goals came from both sides, but it was Big F that gave Andrews a scare as a superb goal
from Adam. gave us a lead and Ian slid in a goal making a 4-2 lead, St Andrews tried there
best to come up but was blocked by Mark, though a few mistakes cost the match as the ball
found the net and one just before half time making it level. It could have been 5-4 when a
shot by Richard hit the top cross bar and straight to the line and out. Big F dominated
the match in a thrilling 1st half,
The 2nd half was dominated by St Andrews who were desperate to try and win, but
found it tough as both teams gave it all. Unfortunately Andrews scored 2 goals within the
first 10 min. Much of the 2nd half was St Andrews, breaking through a tired and yet
challenging team and defence. It was a thrilling match with both sides striking fear and
hope, yet the team was too over whelmend and could not bring the Team spirit into play,
with LH Golie having musch of his hard work cut out in the first half this didnot help as
the pressure increassed, as they lost track and Andrews scored and scored till the final
whistle
Well done all
