MAYC and BREAKOUT

Lighthouse Youth Club.

Whats is MAYC and Breakout - In the beginning... MAYC was known as the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs and was inaugurated in 1945, which brought together Methodist youth clubs from all around Great Britain. At that time MAYC's work centred on supporting youth clubs, providing youth worker training and resources, involvement at national and district level and organising national events, i.e. London Weekend, which brought together youth groups and individuals every year. MAYC, the Name and Logo - MAYC is the youth section of the Methodist Church and is now known as MAYC - Supporting Youth Work in the Methodist Church. Formally, it was referred to as the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs when the main focus of the work centred around youth clubs. However, the shorter name reflects the wider role and work, which includes youth work development, training, campaigns, music and sports.

Origins of London Weekends - The official inauguration of the 'Methodist Association of Youth Clubs' with the launch of the 'Good Ship MAYC' on Saturday June 2 1945 at the Royal Albert Hall set the trend for annual 'London Weekends' The London Weekends continued until 1998 and was the highlight of MAYC's work. It offered fun, fellowship and friendship to thousands of young people who attended. The event through the years grew in popularity and in scope until it was replaced by Breakout in 1999. Breakout has now evolved to a biennial event and in 2004 saw MAYC Breakout ‘X:posed’ in Blackpool.

And Now  - Breackout 2002 was more or less the last thing we did with MAYC, although still doing various activites (District Quiz and sports till 2003) and projects we havent really done anything since then, mostly due to drop in members and changes. One day we may Return.
