WORKING FOR THE RIGHTS OF STREET CHILDREN

World Action has teamed up with the Consortium for Street Children to run Streets Apart. The campaign aims to:

  • Provoke change which protects, empowers and provides for street children and helps to prevent children from being forced onto the street
  • Raise awareness about what causes children to live on the streets and what mechanisms exist for change
  • Take action on issues of juvenile justice in support of street children
  • Influence the work of the World Bank, The United Nations and the UK Government Department for International Development
  • Focus attention on Bangladesh, Brazil and Macedonia by lobbying their governments and fundraising for these three projects

The Launch

The launch of Streets Apart at Breakout 2000 (30 September) was a huge success. The highlight of the launch was the act of dedication when all 5,000 people present were invited to join in committing themselves to working on the campaign using these words:

"We promise to accept street children as a fact in our lives
We will learn to understand their needs
We will argue for their rights to be recognized
We will fight for them to receive justice
We will work to support projects that provide for them
We will pray for them to know happiness, security and comfort
In solidarity we stand alongside the street children of the world."

Why not volunteer?

"This year I joined the resources team and helped to produce the magazine for Streets Apart. With this experience I ran a workshop at Breakout and provided information at the World Action stand. As a volunteer, Breakout was the culmination of much hard work. MAYC events are always the perfect opportunity to refresh spiritual batteries, but this weekend was special, because of actions I had taken, friends I had made and the inspirational people I was able to meet. From the inside, Breakout was completely different - even more spiritually uplifting but, as always, truly enjoyable!"
